Joining the podcast today is current second year medical student Michael Defilippo. Mike worked as a paramedic for more than four year prior to entering medical school. He joins us today with insights and recommendations for surviving the first year of medical school, as well as what it is like to move on from being a paramedic to being a medical student.

Why did Mike go to medical school? Mike discusses seeing a complicated pediatric cardiology case that planted the seed for him to move beyond being a paramedic. Seeing current physicians who previously worked as medics being doctors helped his decision making process.

Why medical school instead of another pursuit such as P.A. or N.P.? Mike discusses what catalyzed his decision to move into a physician role, as opposed to choosing other career choices.

How do you juggle working a full-time schedule while also going through undergrad? A concern of some potential medical students is that there isn’t enough time to go through school and keep up with your studies. Mike and Ed went through undergrad together, and discuss the challenges of tackling a full-time work schedule and a full-time school schedule. Additionally, Mike discusses moving from a full-time work/school schedule to transitioning into the role of a medical student and time management.

What study habits work the best in medical school? Does being paramedic help? Ed and mike discuss the value of being a paramedic before moving into medical school, and whether or not the study habits that you pick up in medic school are helpful when pursuing medicine.

What about being a non-traditional student? Are there any advantages to being a non-traditional student? Is age really a factor in medical education? Is maturity a factor of concerns moving into medical school?
