One of the most frequent questions medical students get is “How did you get into medical school?” or “What can I do to get into medical school?” The reality is that there is no magic formula or silver bullet to get into medical school. Today, we’ll discuss the top undergraduate majors in the United States, and what a “good” MCAT score is. Does it really matter what your GPA is? What about extracurricular activities? The reality is that there are so many variables as to what schools are looking for that it is almost impossible to say. What about acceptance rates? How high or low are they? Simply put, acceptance into American medical schools is low. Most U.S. schools have an acceptance rate of about 3%. So if 5,000 students apply to a school, 150 students will be accepted. Those numbers are astonishing, and frankly are unsustainable. Also, consider that there are schools in the Caribbean that are becoming more popular and have more students in residency that American schools do. Do Caribbean schools offer an acceptable or preferable alternative to American schools? Maybe. What it comes down to is you have to keep an open mind, apply to as many places as you can, and always do the best you can in school. The rest is out of your hands.

Paper of the week: Anderson, et al. JAMA 2/2017 Anderson and colleagues examined over 100,000 patients that were intubated during cardiac arrest in an observational cohort study from 2000-2014. They found that early intubation was associated with decreased ROSC and decreased survival to discharge when compared to patients who were intubated later in the code.

The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman is a book that offers insight and wisdom from Stoic philosophers. The book is designed to read one page a day (with one extra for leap years!). The book is easy to read, and I have found it to be extraordinarily helpful during times of stress.
